These FREE online workshops will be taught by Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute Food Security Coordinator Mik Turje, and will be on the online video platform Zoom.

RCFSI Garden Workshop Series May 2020

VEGGIE GARDENING 101                                                         Friday May 15, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Always wanted to learn how to grow your food but don’t know where to start? Have you tried but been met with frustration? This beginners-level gardening workshop will go over all the basics you need to know to start growing your own vegetables: Soil health basics, planting (from seed and transplanting), watering, fertility, harvesting, plant health, troubleshooting, and information about the most common vegetable plant families and what they need to thrive!

GARDEN PLANNING                                                            Thursday May 21, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Productive gardening isn’t just about healthy soil and plants, it’s about planning for success! Learn about crop rotation, succession planting, and companion planting. Create a garden map and a planting and harvest schedule to help you get everything planted on time, lengthen your harvest, create steady production, and increase garden health and diversity. With proper planning, you will be amazed at how productive even a small garden can be!

CONTAINER GARDENING                                                    Tuesday May 26, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

No garden? Learn how to work with the patio or balcony space you’ve got to grow veggies and herbs right outside your door. This beginner-friendly workshop will cover the basics of container gardening including:

  • Materials (containers, soil, and supplements)
  • Planning your container garden (what to grow, when, in which containers)
  • Caring for your container garden (moisture, soil, & fertility management)


GARDEN PROBLEM-SOLVING                                          Wednesday June 3 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Shady garden? Poor soil? Pests, disease, or weed problems? Only have a tiny space?

If you think you don’t have the right space to grow your own food, think again! Learn how to troubleshoot and solve garden problems and make the best of your challenging growing situation to produce your own delicious veggies all season long!



Mik Turje has been working in community food and agriculture for over a decade: First as a small-scale organic farmer on Vancouver Island and in Richmond, and later as a community development worker in the food and urban agriculture movements. Mik was the Urban Agriculture Coordinator at The Stop Community Food Centre, and now coordinates the Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute in East Vancouver.
